I live the world

El Presidio Modelo, Cuba

La Isla

I bet that when I mention Cuba, you think of cigars… and, of course, those colorful elegant and sublime oldtimers. Then again, Cuba has so many more charming assets. A friendly population that has found more than a creative solution to supply shortages caused by the embargo. Its coastline covered by a veil of islets, where you can find the purest, most idyllic beaches. Most of the time nobody will be there. Part of the reason being Cuba’s population density, which varies around 100 inhabitants per square kilometer and places it roughly in the middle tier globally. Should you wish to avoid places where locals are outnumbered by tourists, then head South. South across the Gulf of Batabano on a plane or a ferry.
La Isla de la Juventud covers some 2.200 square kilometers with a headcount of 30 to 36 individuals for each one. Most of the inhabitants live in the North around its capital, Nueva Gerona. Pine forests cover most of its surface and make lumber a predominant industry. However, you will also find agricultural activity with citrus fruit and vegetables as the main crops. Fishing is, of course, also well developed.
Surprisingly, Cuba has a decent offer of Airbnb accommodation. Most rooms are basic and you should not expect fancy design, but cleanliness and friendliness are top notch.
